As a local, I know the Oktoberfest is a festival the whole world talks about. Every year, it kicks off mid-September and runs until the first weekend of October. Preparations begin as early as July, so you can imagine—this isn’t just any festival; it’s a massive celebration of Bavarian culture!

But if you’re planning to visit the Oktoberfest, the big questions remain: Where to stay in Munich for Oktoberfest? Which are the best hotels in Munich near Oktoberfest?

Whether you’re traveling on a budget, looking for luxury, or want something unique, this guide will help you find the perfect accommodation for Germany`s (and the world`s) biggest beer festival.

Hotels Near Oktoberfest in Munich

If you`re planning to visit the Oktoberfest in 2026, I highly recommend you book your accommmodation as soon as possible. The Oktoberfest is so popular that on the first weekend, more than a million people visit the festival.

Consequently, the best hotels sells out quickly during the Oktoberfest. In 2026, it starts on 19th September and ends on 4th October.

Location of Oktoberfest in 2026

Oktoberfest is held at the Theresienwiese, a large festival ground just southwest of central Munich.

“Wiesn,” as locals call Oktoberfest, means “meadow” in Bavarian and comes from the local abbreviation “Theresienwiese.” The first Oktoberfest was held here in 1810, and the Theresienwiese has remained its permanent home ever since.

Before I moved to Munich, I imagined Oktoberfest as a huge field filled with beer tents.
In reality, it feels more like an amusement park and state fair combined, with roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, carnival games, food stands, and enormous beer halls.

The closest U-Bahn (local subway) station is Theresienwiese, on the U4 and U5 lines. For easy access while still staying in central Munich, hotels near Munich Central Station, Karlsplatz (Stachus), or Marienplatz are also well located.

Construction for Oktoberfest begins months in advance. For 2026, construction started as early as the beginning of July.

When Is Oktoberfest 2026?

Oktoberfest 2026 runs from Saturday, September 19, through Sunday, October 4, 2026. The Munich festival lasts 16 days and takes place at the Theresienwiese festival grounds.

Despite its name, most of Oktoberfest takes place in September. The original festival was held in October, but in 1872, its starting date was moved forward to take advantage of warmer weather and longer daylight hours.

Munich weather during Oktoberfest is difficult to predict. You may experience chilly temperatures of 5–10°C (41–50°F) or warm weather with 30°C (86°F).

Weekends are usually the busiest time to visit, as Munich residents join the many international visitors. Beer tents can reach capacity as early as noon, particularly on Saturdays.

From my experience, the best times to visit Oktoberfest are on weekdays or early on weekend mornings. On weekends, the festival grounds can already feel very crowded by around 11:30 a.m.

For the best chance of finding a table without a reservation, arrive when the beer tents open: at 10 a.m. on weekdays or 9 a.m. on weekends. The tents are still clean and freshly prepared, and empty tables are easier to find.

Are There Any Unsafe Areas to Stay in Munich?

If you are wondering whether Munich is safe for Oktoberfest, the short answer is yes. For most visitors, there is no particular Munich neighborhood you need to avoid when choosing where to stay.

I remember when I moved to Munich in 2018, I spent quite a bit of time researching different neighborhoods in Munich and Bavaria and wondering whether I could accidentally book a hotel in an unsafe area. In reality, Munich is a very safe city for tourists, including during Oktoberfest.

Munich has both upscale (such as Lehel and Bogenhausen) and more affordable neighborhoods (such as Neuperlach), but the differences are primarily about atmosphere, housing, location, and price – not safety.

Is Munich safe at night?

Yes, Munich is generally safe to walk around at night, including in the city center and around Oktoberfest. The main concern during the festival is usually not violent crime but lost belongings, and problems caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

As with any major tourist event, keep your phone, wallet, passport, and other valuables secure, particularly in crowded areas and on public transportation.

Is it safe to stay near Oktoberfest?

Yes. Staying near Theresienwiese, where Oktoberfest takes place, is generally considered safe. The area becomes extremely busy during the festival, with tourists walking between the beer tents, U-Bahn stations, restaurants, and hotels.

For most visitors, the bigger question is therefore not “Is this area safe?” but “Is this area convenient for my trip?”

Munich is sometimes described as a “big village” because it combines the infrastructure of a major European city with a relatively calm and orderly atmosphere. That makes it an easy destination for first-time visitors from the United States.

So, when choosing your Oktoberfest accommodation, don’t be afraid to stay outside the immediate area around Theresienwiese simply because you see a neighborhood you do not recognize. Check the U-Bahn connection (subway/metro system of Munich), walking distance, hotel quality and price instead.

How to Get Around Munich During Oktoberfest

During Oktoberfest, public transportation is usually your best option. The U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (railway if you stay outside of Munich) run frequently, while taxis can be difficult to find when thousands of people leave the festival at the same time.

In my experience, whenever I tried to call a taxi or book an Uber after Oktoberfest, the estimated waiting time was often so long that I simply took public transportation instead. With the crowds around Theresienwiese, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn are usually the faster and more reliable option.

The closest U-Bahn (subway) stations: Theresienwiese, Schwanthalerhöhe, Poccistraße, and Goetheplatz. You can also walk from Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station) or Hackerbrücke to Oktoberfest in roughly 10–15 minutes. Karlsplatz (Stachus) is also walkable in around 15–20 minutes.

Walking can actually be easier after Oktoberfest, especially when the nearest U-Bahn stations are crowded. If your hotel is in Ludwigsvorstadt, Schwanthalerhöhe, Maxvorstadt, or the city center, check the walking route before automatically taking public transportation.

The U-Bahn runs until about 1:30 a.m., with additional overnight service on Friday through Sunday. The S-Bahn generally runs until around 1:30 a.m. on weekdays and 2:30 a.m. on weekends, with extra Oktoberfest services.

Pro Tip: The beer tents generally close around 11:00 p.m., so you can usually catch the U-Bahn or S-Bahn afterward.
