Königssee looks easy to visit, but there are a few things most first-time visitors do not know. Your timing, the boat stop you choose and how you plan your Königssee day trip can completely change the experience.
I live less than two hours from Lake Königssee in Bavaria and have visited it many times. It is the place I take friends and family when I want to show them one of the most beautiful places in Germany.
In this Königssee travel guide, I will show you exactly how I would plan the day for a friend, including the best boat stops, what is worth seeing and what you can skip.

Arrival at Schönau Am Königssee
To visit Lake Königssee in Germany, you first need to get to Schönau am Königssee. The easiest way is by car, as public transportation from nearby cities is limited.
The closest cities are:
- Salzburg – 35 minutes by car (further read: Salzburg Itinerary)
- Munich – 1.5-2 hours by car (further read: Munich itinerary)
There is a huge parking lot in Schönau am Königssee. It also has a covered section, which is great for protecting your car from heat or possible hail. Arrive early to get parking space under the roof.
Parking costs (credit car payment accepted):
- €9 for 24 hours
- €7 for 3 hours
Arriving with a Campervan / Motorhome
There is a good campervan parking area (location) where you can stay overnight for €25,00.There are no amenities, only a toilet, but you will be just a few minutes from Königssee.
The parking area is next to a river and has beautiful surroundings. We stayed there with our motorhome, and would gladly stay there again. Also, you`ll have a great view of the Kehlsteinhaus from the Stellplatz.
When to Arrive at Schönau am Königssee (Important)
To get a spot in the covered parking area and, more importantly, to catch the first Königssee boat, arrive by 7:45 AM at the latest. After parking your car, walk straight to the boat ticket office (10 minute walk).
The Boat Ticket office opens at 8 a.m. It`s important to be there by 8.am, to avoid queues and also to enjoy Salet and Obersee to the fullest

Königssee Boat Ticket Prices
Boats start at 8:45 AM every day and run continuously until around 4:00 PM. However, I would not recommend taking a boat later than 11 AM, as you may not have enough time to fully enjoy the area.
For the best Königssee experience, buy a boat ticket to Salet, the last station on the lake.
Königgssee Boat Ticket Prices:
- Adults: €29.80
- Children (6–17 years): 50% discount (€14.90)
- Children up to 5 years: Free
- People with disabilities: Free
- Dog ticket: €5.
For families, one paying adult can buy the first child’s ticket (6–17 years) at the regular child price. All additional children aged 6–17 travel for just €1 each.
Dogs are allowed on the boat. Important: All dogs must wear a Maulkorb (muzzle). If you don’t have one, you can buy one in a nearby shops.
Online booking is available in advance. However, the last time I tried, all online tickets were already sold out. So, we simply arrived at the ticket office at 8:00 AM and had no problem getting tickets for the first boat.

Königssee Lake Boat Tour – Tips
Having visited Königssee several times, I recommend taking one of the first boats (depart at 8.45 a.m) from Schönau am Königssee to Salet, especially if it is your first visit.
Salet is the last stop on Lake Königssee and gives you the most time to explore the area’s highlights before the crowds arrive.
During the journey, the boat crew stops near the famous echo wall and demonstrates the Königssee Echo by playing a trumpet across the lake.
The first stop will be St. Bartholomä. Don`t get out of the boat here – you can visit this spot on the way back, I promise. 🙂
Go all the way to Salet.

From Salet to Obersee (Easy Hike)
Once you reach Salet by boat across Königssee, you will be surrounded by some of the most magnificent mountain views in Germany. It seriously does not get much better than this.
In case you are already hungry when you arrive, there are also two places to eat close to the Salet boat station.
From the Salet boat station, you can walk to Obersee in around 10–15 minutes. As you reach the lake, you will see the Instagram-famous viewpoint with the wooden boathouses. For the best light, take your pictures in the afternoon.
Then, continue directly towards Fischunkelalm.
Fischunkelalm is located at the far end of Obersee and takes around 50–60 minutes to reach from Salet. The hike is easy and follows the lakeside through Berchtesgaden National Park. You will have beautiful views along the entire trail, and the water seems to become even bluer with every step.
When you reach Fischunkelalm, you can stop for fresh milk, bread and local products such as cheese and ham. One of my favourite photo spots was close to the alm, with views across Obersee and the surrounding mountains.
You can also swim in Obersee, so do not forget your swimwear. The lake may not be warmer than 15°C, although I still swam in it with my dog. It was amazing.
Because we took the first Königssee boat in the morning, the hiking trail was not busy. This changes throughout the day, which is why it is worth taking the first boat to Salet.
