Everything has recently changed regarding how to get to the famous Drei Zinnen / Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites in Italy.
As of May 2025, car access to the Tre Cime requires an online pre-booking. Upon booking, the slots are limited, and the fees have increased.
Besides the pre-registration to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, you might wonder whether:
- Is pre-registration the only option to visit the Tre Cime?
- How long in advance should you do the registration?
- Where to base yourself before visiting the Tre Cime di Lavaredo?
Well, if you take the bus, no preregistration is needed. If you choose to drive your car there, book at least 3-4 days in advance, especially if your visit is on a weekend. And where to base yourself? Read further to see which option is best for you.
In July 2025, I revisited the Tre Cime to see the changes myself. Based on that experience, I put together this travel guide to help you navigate the new system. Let`s dive right in!

Where to Stay Before Visiting Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Having stayed in all three closest locations to the Drei Zinnen – Auronzo di Cadore, Cortina d’Ampezzo, and Misurina – let me help you decide where to base yourself on your Dolomites trip.
Auronzo di Cadore – Best for Local Atmosphere and Direct Access
Auronzo is a great option if you’re looking for an authentic Italian town with a warmer climate.
It has a scenic lake and sunset views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The town has some great pizza places (I loved AL RIO!) and a relaxed vibe.
A major advantage is the direct bus to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, which makes visiting the area hassle-free without needing to drive.
In July 2025, we stayed in Auronzo and took the bus to Tre Cime — no registration needed. It was nearly empty until Misurina, so it was also very convenient.

Cortina d’Ampezzo – Best for Style, Dining, and a Central Location in the Dolomites
Cortina is a more well-known option, often referred to as the capital of the Dolomites, it offers high-end hotels, shops, and plenty of bars and restaurants. The climate is cooler due to its altitude, and the town has a more exclusive feel.
There is no direct bus to Tre Cime from Cortina, so you’ll need to drive there.
Best hotel for price/quality: [Ajarnola Locazioni Turist]
Misurina – Best for Proximity to Tre Cime and Scenic Views
If visiting Tre Cime di Lavaredo is your main goal, Misurina is the most convenient choice. It’s closest to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and has several restaurants and tourist shops along the lake.
Misurina`s climate is cooler, and the setting is scenic with the Misurina lake and the dramatic Dolomites backdrop. However, it is the most touristy (and therefore crowded) option.
For van travellers, there`s a large campervan car park to stay the night at.
