Stöhrhaus, Berchtesgaden: Hiking to and Sleeping at an Alpine Hut

Sharing is caring!

There are only a few better things than spending time outdoors. When my friends invited me for a 2-day hike which included sleeping at the Stöhrhaus, a mountain hut in the Berchtesgaden National Park in Germany, I knew that we were going to have a blast!

In this post, I will share all you need to know to visit the Stöhrhaus in Germany. After answering the FAQs about the mountain hut and showing you our room for the night, I list the options for how to reach it. Lastly, I will share our experience and the hiking route we chose.

  • Stöhrhaus, Hochtron, Berchtesgaden,
    Stöhrhaus in the morning lights
  • Scenery from the Stoehrhaus, Berchtesgaden, Germany

Frequently Asked Questions about the Stöhrhaus

Staying at the Stöhrhaus was the first time for me to stay at a mountain hut. I had no idea what to expect. I was worried about hygiene and freezing to death at night.

Now luckily, the Stöhrhaus was renovated a few years ago, therefore it turned out to be perfect for me as a first-timer looking for a little bit more comfort. Personally, to me, it felt like staying in a budget hotel room.

The Stöhrhaus is to be found on a mountain called Hochthron, in the Berchtesgaden Region in Germany. The Berchtesgaden Alps is one of the most beautiful regions in Bavaria.

The Berchtesgaden National Park became famous for the Königssee, the Eagle`s Nest, and the Scenic Watzmann Mountain.

Although the Berchtesgaden area gets busy during summertime, there are still lesser-known hiking routes waiting to be discovered, such as the Archenkanzel right above the Königssee.

Prior to your stay, it is advisable to book. During summer weekends, the Stöhrhaus is likely fully booked.
Check availability and book your stay here.

My best advice is to pack light! You often need less than you think.

Necessary to bring:
ID Card and DAV Card if you have
Sleep liner or a Sleeping Bag
Slippers
Warm Clothing
Cash (no card payment possible)
Sunscreen and head cover
Torch

Good to have:
Power Bank for your Phone
Small Towel or Hygienic Wipes to freshen up
Small Toiletry Bag
Waste Bag – you need to take your waste with you
Binoculars to see Mountain Goats
Earplugs

There is no warm water available at the Stöhrhaus.

No, there are no showers in the Stöhrhaus. It is best to bring a small towel or hygienic wipes to freshen up.

Dogs are allowed in double rooms. However, you have to contact the Stöhrhaus in advance and notify them about bringing your four-legged friend with you.
Reason: There are only 2 suitable rooms for accommodating your dog.

Yes, blankets are available. However, for hygienic purposes, it is necessary to bring your own bed liner or a sleeping bag. The blankets at most mountain huts are not washed after every use.

There is no heating in the Stöhrhaus. However, when we spent the night there, it was surprisingly pleasant and we did not feel cold at all! To know what to expect, check the weather forecast beforehand.

No, we checked in without a DAV Card. However, it`s good to have a DAV Card because it enables you to stay at the mountain huts at a heavily discounted (sometimes 50% off) rate.

Our Dog-Friendly Room

If you want to bring your dog, you need to notify the owners in advance. We personally found ourselves lucky because we got accommodated in a 2-beds-room, while our friends needed to share a 4-beds-room.
We spent a cozy night there at this beautiful mountain hut and our dog also received a basket to sleep in.

How to reach the Stöhrhaus

The Stöhrhaus is located at the top of the Untersberg Mountain in Germany and it can be reached only by hiking. There are hiking paths leading to the Stöhrhaus, both from Austria and Germany:

From Austria:
Starting Point of the Hike: Bergstation Unterbergsbahn
The Unterbergsbahn will take you up right to the Untersberg. Optionally, you can hike up to the top of the Untersberg, although, it would make your journey to the Stöhrhaus very long, therefore I do not recommend it.

Arriving By Car: You can park your car at the Unterbergsbahn.
Arriving By Public Transportation: From Salzburg City Centre (Mozartsteg), take bus #5 which frequently operates between the city center and the Untersbergbahn. After around 30 minutes, take off the bus at Grödig Unterbergsbahn.

Untersbergbahn one-way ticket costs:
– Adult: 20,50 EUR
– Seniors: 18,50 EUR
– Students: 16 EUR
– Children: 13 EUR
– Dog: 8 EUR

From Germany:
Starting Point of the Hike: Hintergern, Berchtesgaden.

Arriving By Bar: You can leave your car in this Parking Lot. From here it takes around 30 minutes walking to reach the start of the hiking route.
Arriving By Public Transportation: from Berchtesgaden Central Bus Station, take bus no# 837. Take off at Hintergern, Berchtesgaden. From Here you need to walk until you leave the village and see the start of the hiking route, around 15 minutes.

Stöhrhaus 2-Day-Hiking Adventure: Our Chosen Route

For a 2-Day-Hiking Adventure, I advise you to do it the same way as we did.

We started in Austria and took the cable car up to the Untersberg, which took us to an 1805-meter altitude. From there, we followed trail no. 417 towards Stöhrhaus/Berchtesgadener Hochthron.
It was a long, but very enjoyable hike (due to minimal altitude difference) with the most beautiful panorama and cloud formations along the hike.
We arrived at the Stöhrhaus after around 4 hours of walking (incl. many breaks).

The next day, after waking up to see the sunrise from the Hochthron Peak, we had breakfast and continued with a long descent towards Berchtesgaden. By the time we arrived at the bus stop on the outskirts of Berchtesgaden, we were happy but very tired. We needed around 6 hours to finish the trek.

How to take the same hiking route:

So, here is all you need to do to take the same hiking route:
Day 1: Unterbergsbahn Bergstation – Stöhrhaus
1. Go to the Unterbergsbahn Talstation and take the cable car. You can leave your car here.
2. From the Untersberg Bergstation, Hike towards the Stöhrhaus on route no. 417 (3-4 hours, following the signs towards Berchtesgadener Hochthron/Stöhrhaus)
3. Arrive at the Stöhrhaus and enjoy its panoramic terrace.

Day 2: Stöhrhaus – Berchtesgaden
1. Watch the sunrise from the Hochthron (a 20-minute hike from your accommodation).
2. Have breakfast and get ready for the day.
3. From Stöhrhaus, hike towards Berchtesgaden, until Hochgern Bus Station. (around 6 hours)
4. Catch the bus no. #837 towards Berchtesgaden Centre.
5. If your car is at the Untersbergbahn you have two options:
– take bus no# 840 towards Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and get off at the “Gröding, Untersbergbahn” stop. (30 minutes journey)
– take a taxi or Uber to go back to the Untersbergbahn (15-minute drive)

  • View of the Watzmann from Hoctron in Berchtesgaden
My all-time favourite mountain: the Watzmann

Hot Beverages in the Mountains are a good idea

Watching the Sunrise from the Berchtesgadener Hochtron

If you overnight at the Stöhrhaus in Berchtesgaden, watching the sunrise is a must!
From the Störhhaus, you can be at the top of the mountain (Hochthron) in under 20 minutes.
